Meta’s April Fool’s Comes Early

As one EU official put it, the system is “too difficult for users to go through to the end.” That’s not an accident — that’s strategy. Every frustrated user who gives up is one fewer complaint to process, one less moderation cost on the balance sheet.
And yet, paradoxically, the same platforms are hyper-efficient when it comes to over-moderation. Posts about Palestine or corporate power vanish into the algorithmic void — quietly de-amplified or “shadow banned.” Meta has built a system where scams stay up and dissent gets buried. It’s not a glitch; it’s policy.
The EU says Meta’s systems are not only ineffective but deceptive — breaching their legal obligations under the DSA. They also found that researchers trying to study online harms are being blocked from accessing key platform data, a violation of transparency rules. In other words: the public can’t see how bad things really are.
If Meta fails to fix its systems, it faces fines of up to 6% of its global revenue — theoretically billions. But anyone who’s watched EU enforcement knows that these penalties tend to arrive years late and toothless, by which time Meta’s already “rolled out” another shiny PR campaign about “safety tools for teens.”
TikTok, meanwhile, has joined the chorus of corporate irony by claiming it can’t comply with transparency rules because they might violate privacy laws. Europe’s tech regulation now resembles a circular firing squad: one law demanding openness, another forbidding it.
So yes — maybe April Fool’s has come early. Except the joke’s been running for years, and the punchline hasn’t changed: Meta does jack shit, and we keep clicking anyway.
